Your Calling–Delayed?

Waiting for your hopes to come true can be agonizing! When events or opportunities are delayed, we are often surprised and upset. This has been happening to many of us during the Coved pandemic.

As with most families, we felt strongly restricted, even in terms of attending church. So, we started to seek some freedom from the restrictions of the shutdown. Our method was traveling! In the last three months, we have been traveling from our birth-place State in the USA to two other States. But, if you have traveled much, you know that it prevents you from having time for serious work. Each RV park or hotel has some restrictions and different Wi-Fi and facilities. Each day has been filled with unpacking from the last move or packing for the next move! As you might imagine, I love to write and have dreams of teaching the bible and writing more Blogs and books. Moving has not been kind to what I feel has been my “calling” by the Lord.

Can you relate to any of this?  Are you a bit frustrated and delayed in reaching your goals and dreams for the future because of the restrictions? Or, maybe there are other things that have been holding you back, just as the traveling has done for me.

I invite you to take a short journey through the bible to discover God’s purpose in giving all of us a CALLING—a heavenly cry to our hearts to accomplish something for Jesus.

Your Calling

The Bible emphasizes that we are called by God to join His kingdom. The lovers of God in the Old Testament spoke of this, first to flee from evil and then to call Israelites to holy wars, then to call individuals to God. This is repeated in the New Testament as shown in the following verses (NIV unless noted).

Old Testament:

1 Samuel 3:8, 10: (Verse 8): “A third time the LORD called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, ‘Here I am. You called me.’ Then Eli realized that the LORD was CALLING the boy.” (Verse 10): then, “The LORD came and stood there, CALLING like the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” (By the way, this is an important step in “hearing the voice of God” in your life. Just pray and repeat the words that young Samuel used to hear messages from God).

Isaiah 40:3 “ the voice of one CALLING in the desert, prepare the way for the Lord and make a way for the Lord. Make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God” (the famous prophetic description of John the Baptist about 700 years in advance, repeated in the Luke chapter 3).

Joel 2:32: “everyone who CALLS on the name of the Lord will be saved!” Peter used this verse as he preached to the crowd at Pentecost.

New Testament:

Romans 8:28-30 “God…decided from the outset to shape the lives of those who love him along the same lines as the life of His Son. The Son stands first in the line of humanity He restored. We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in Him. After God made that decisions of what His children should be like, He followed it up by CALLING people by name…And then, after getting them established, He stayed with them to the end, gloriously completing what He had begun (The Message).

Mark 12:33: CALLING His disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you; this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.

Ephesians 4:1: As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the CALLING you have received.

Philippians 3:13: “…one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward CALL of God in Christ Jesus” (NKJV)

Hebrews 3:1: (The Message): “Christian friends, companions in following this CALL to the heights, take a good hard look at Jesus. He’s the centerpiece of everything we believe…”

Your Calling Revisited

What is the CALLING that Jesus has put into your soul and spirit? Do you have any signs, nudges, “God winks,” or taps on your shoulder that say, “Do this—it is your CALLING?” There might be a small step that will get you started. Have you thought about that?  Sometimes, I find it just takes a small step to get started on a big project. For writing a book, for example, I have started by writing the front page—the title and author! There is always a small step to get you started on the CALLING God has for you.

God’s Timing for Fulfilling the Call

My wonderful wife of 54 years just reminded me that God is watching over us and often allows certain “seasons” where doors are opened or shut. When we are in a season of delay, He is often teaching us or maturing our faith. Waiting is no fun, but often helps us grow and expand our prayer life or teach us more from His Word. At the right times, the doors of hope and fulfillment open and we flourish like sunflowers (Son-flowers?) in the valley. Romans 5:3 reminds us that tribulations lead to perseverance, perseverance, character, and character, hope! Let us “hang in there” for the time is coming! There is HOPE!

Try Praise and Worship

Know that praise and worship music will keep you going!  Jesus loves to hear us singing! Enjoy the journey and the blessings of iworship423!

Here is a good song to add to your worship: “Stand in Your Love” by Josh  Baldwin, Ethan Hulse, Rita Springer, and Mark Harris, Bethel Music, Victory CD, track 4 (Available at our “STORE” link or the Bethel Music link on the “LINK” page). A key verse in the song is:

“There’s power that breaks off every chain. There’s power in Your name—Jesus!”
